Southern Technical University was established in mid-August 2014 and is affiliated with the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research. Headquartered in Basra Governorate, the university was founded in response to the growing requirements for technical and scientific expansion in the south of Iraq. It serves as a significant addition to the network of technical and academic universities throughout the country. Upon its founding, the university included the following colleges and institutes:
The university subsequently expanded to meet labor market demands and the essential requirements of the southern governorates, aiming to enrich the scientific and technical sectors with specialized engineering and technical personnel. This expansion included the establishment of the College of Graduate Studies, providing a vital pathway for students to pursue advanced academic degrees.
Consistent with this growth strategy, the Technical College of Dhi Qar was inaugurated, offering specializations in Electromechanical Engineering and Accounting Technologies. This was followed by the opening of the Maysan Technical College, focusing on Electromechanical Engineering and Building and Construction Engineering. Furthermore, the Shatra Technical College was established, featuring departments in Medical Laboratory Technologies as well as Plant Tissue Culture and Medicinal Plants.
For the 2024/2025 academic year, the Technical Institute of Basra underwent a strategic restructuring. It has been reorganized into three specialized entities: the Institute of Technology, the Medical Technical Institute, and the Administrative Technical Institute.
Through these developments, the university remains committed to supplying both the public and private sectors with qualified graduates. By providing rigorous scientific and technical training, the institution ensures that students are equipped to meet labor market needs and strengthen their professional standing.
