The Southern Technical University  was established in  middle of August in 2014 and  it linked to the Ministry  of Higher Education and Scientific Research ,The headquarters of the university in the province of Basra, where this development  comes based on  technical scientific  expansion requirements in south of Iraq to be an important addition ,To  Its counterparts  from technical and academic universities Scattered in the land of our dear country , The university included in the beginning of its establish the following colleges and institutes:

Basra Engineering Technical College
Basra Administrative Technical College
Basra Health and Medical Technical College
Basra Technical Institute
Nasiriyah Technical Institute
Shatra Technical Institute
Amara Technical Institute
Qurna Technical Institute

The university then expanded in response to the demands of the labor market and the urgent need of our beloved southern governorates to enrich the scientific and technical fields with technical and engineering cadres. This included the opening of the Graduate Studies College, which has become an important addition for university students, allowing them to fulfill their aspirations for higher education. Similarly, the Technical College in Dhi Qar Governorate was opened with its two branches: Electromechanics and Accounting Technology. The Maysan Technical College was also established with its two branches: Electromechanics and Construction Engineering. Following that, the Al-Shatra Technical College was opened with two branches: Medical Laboratory Technology and Tissue Culture and Medicinal Plants. Additionally, the Technical Institute in Basra Governorate was divided into three sections (Technology, Administrative, and Medical). With all these developments, the university continues to prepare its students for the labor market, whether in the government or private sectors, by providing them with scientific and technical qualifications to meet those needs and enhance their scientific standing.
